Servers in Linux






Linux has differnet types of server configurations for different job tasks.In Redhat Linux mainly the servers available to configure are:

  • DNS
  • DHCP
  • NIS
  • NFS
  • Samba
  • FTP
  • Sendmail


  • DNS
    DNS is a Domain Naming Service.This DNS resolves the naming conventions of the clients.

    Types of DNS:
  • Master
  • Slave
  • Caching


  • DHCP
    DHCP is "Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol".
    It assigns the ip address dynamically to the client systems.

    NIS
    NIS is "Network Information System".
    It consists users data base of the specific network.
    Remote administration of users.

    NFS
    NFS is "Network File System".
    NFS is default file system in case of network concepts.
    Its application is to share the directories between Linux systems.

    Samba
    In Redhat Linux Samba shares the files from windows to linux and vice versa.
    It shares resources like
  • Folders
  • Printers
  • SMB PDC
  • SWAT


  • Sendmail
    Sendmail is helpful for linux client users to create and send mails.
